Our First Summer Trip

After having said to each other that we need to get the boats out more this year, we looked into finding other folks that have similar interests and found The Carolina Berg Wanderers, http://www.meetup.com/hiking-323/, a Meetup Group of people who love all things outdoors. Our first trip with them was a Paddling Adventure on the Catawba River, on June 12. It was to be an easy paddle from the put-in at Mount Holly Rd down to the US National Whitewater Center, for lunch and back. Easy it was on the way down, to a degree except that the folks we were paddling with all had kayaks that you sit inside and much faster and lighter. As we slugged along in our sit-on tops, we felt like we were holding everyone back, but we paddled to the Whitewater Center, had lunch, met two others that rented kayaks from the center to join us, paddled to a sand bar, got out and swam then started heading back to the put-in…Ooops…they turned on the dam and the water came rushing at us (well not really rushing, but coming at quite a pace) and can we tell you how much fun we were NOT having then, as we trudged back up river to the put-in? That’s the day we decided to look at the possibility of buying grown-up boats.

We are Ken and Joni Webster and we were looking for something we could do together that we would both enjoy. With little research and a beer pocketbook, we set out to buy our first kayaks four years ago. We purchased Sea Kayaks, sit-on-tops, and headed out to have a good time. For the last four years we took the boats out and piddled around, yes I said piddled, exploring the Congaree National Park, Edisto River and areas of Lake Norman and Lake Wylie. We got out three or four times each summer, in the last few years having great fun, but this year decided that we needed to do more…
